Over the past year, I’ve been taking part in the Professional Landscape Programme at the Newlyn School of Art. This experience has inspired me to push boundaries, explore new approaches, deepen my artistic practice and develop my personal style.

The work you see below is the result of this course...experimental, playful, thoughtful and immersive...

Artist Statement

Rooted in the rugged beauty of West Penwith, my artistic practice is an evolving conversation between landscape, memory, and material. Using acrylic & mixed media, my work is abstract and experimental, defined by heavily textured surfaces with the addition of natural materials, found objects, and pigments I create from the land itself.

Each piece begins with immersion: I walk the terrain, sketch, paint en plein air, photograph, and research the geography and history that have shaped the land. My process is intuitive and layered, building texture upon texture, then removing and reapplying until the surface becomes a weathered echo of the landscape it reflects. I embed site-specific textures like sand and grit, and incorporate found materials gathered from the landscape that deepen the bond between artwork and place.

I am drawn to the ancient rock formations of West Penwith—not just for their visual presence but for their energy, magnetism, and anthropomorphic qualities. The rock formations feel alive with mystery and memory. I often wonder: what have they witnessed? What knowledge do they hold? My work seeks to honour that enigmatic force and invite others to feel its presence.

Ultimately, I make art to express reverence—for the enduring beauty of the landscape, for its evolving story, and for the environmental concerns that threaten its future.
